The Messiah, it is said, will come as the Son of Adonai; but also as a descendant of David.
And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee a house. And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. (2 Samuel 7:11-15) See also 1st Chronicles 17:11-14 and Psalm 2.
I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him. And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him. But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted. I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers. He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I keep for him forevermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
(Psalms 89:20-29)
From David to Joseph, there is a traceable lineage to establish a credible heir to David’s throne. After the Jerusalem massacre and diaspora of 70 AD, that traceable lineage was lost. If one were to come today and claim lineage to the throne of David, it would be very difficult for him to prove that lineage.
Since Joseph is argued by modern Jewish scholars to not be the biological father of Yeshua, they claim that he has no legitimate right to the throne of David. In so doing, they reject their own rules and laws of adoption. He is testified to be fully accepted as Joseph’s son (Mark 6:3), therefore full legal heir to Joseph’s position.
Herod “The Great” was the first non-Jewish monarch to reign in Jerusalem. His position should have alerted the Jewish people that Shiloh’s (or the Messiah’s) advent was eminent, based upon Jacob’s prophecy in Genesis 49:10.
Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
