There is a verse that my Orthodox and Conservative friends always throw at me, which I've never been able to make sense of, until this Shabbat. When you don't understand it, it sounds nuts, then when you understand it, it's beautiful.
“And when he heard that Arkhilius was king in Yehuda in place of Herodus his father, he was afraid to go there, and (it) was revealed to him in a dream that he should go to the land of Galeela. And he came and dwelled in the city that is called Nasrath, so That might might be fulfilled the thing which was spoken by the prophet that ‘He will be called a Nasraya.’” Mattityahu 2:22-24 (Younan)
Now they always like to point out that there is no such prophecy. What I realised is the word "that." When I say John said "super-balls bounce," that is a direct quote. What happens when I put a "that" on it, though? John said that super-balls bounce. You don't expect that John said that in so many words, do you? I am summarizing what John said. Mattai is summarizing what the prophet said, not directly quoting it.
Nazarene (aram. Nasraya) comes from the word Natzar, meaning "he preserved." A Nazarene is a preserved one. The fact that Yeshua was taken to Nazareth is a play on words. He was both from Nazareth, and a preserved one. Where is this prophecy? I found two that might fit the bill.
“The mind which stays on you, you will keep in perfect shalom; for in you he trusts.” Yeshayahu 26:3
and, “I, YHWH, I have called you in righteousness and will hold your hand and will keep you and give you for a covenant of the peole; as a light of the Gentiles.” Yeshayahu 42:6
Anywho, I thought that was really cool.
