Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness;
וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים v’yomer Elohim, and God said; נַעֲשֶׂה אָדָם בְּצַלְמֵנוּ na’aseh adam b’tsalmenu, בְּ b’ in the beginning means “in.” The נוּ nu at the end is plural and means “ours.” צַלְמֵ tsenem means image. It’s connected to the word צַלְ tsel, shadow. A shadow is an imperfect image cast on the ground. And Adam comes from the adamah, from the earth, [or ground]. כִּדְמוּתֵנוּ ch’dmutenu. דְמוּתֵ dmut is a form of image; a likeness. כִּ ch is unto, or like. נוּ nu is ours. So “into our likeness.”
זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה בָּרָא אֹתָם
Genesis 1:27c zachar v’nikevah bara atem, male and female made them.
This was written as a reminder to people who had recently been slaves of where they, and indeed all people came from. They’d just gotten their freedom, but probably still did not know how to handle it. Their minds were dominated by the Egyptian system where Pharaoh was at the top and they were at the bottom of all society. Egyptians believed Pharaoh was created in the image of god. So Elohim starts by making this proclamation, “Let Us make this Adam, this creature connected with the earth in Our image.” It is not just the Pharaoh that is the image of God, it is everyone. So the first lines of expose this great lie to the Hebrews.
28. And God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it;
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם אֱלֹהִים v’yomer l’hem Elohim, and God said unto them; פְּרוּ וּרְבוּ pru urvu. Pri, or pru means fruit, and urvu is from the same root, rav, as rabbi. Rav means much, and a rabbi is someone who has much knowledge. So “much fruit,” or be fruitful. וּמִלְאוּ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ umilu et’ha’aretz, and fill the earth.
There were two major types of relationships in the ancient near-east. There were relationships between people that were equal in status to each other, and also the suzerain-vassal relationship. That was the relationship of the “king of kings” and vassal nations. They committed resources to the king, who protected the smaller nations which would otherwise be plundered continually. They would put statues of the king everywhere, telling everyone the king was watching over this place, letting everyone know who is in control. But God is saying to Adam and Eve “You are my statues, my images. You represent My authority; you represent the kingdom of God. Now go, fill the earth: put the images of the kingdom of God everywhere.”
The last word is כִבְשֻׁהָ chivshuah. Chvish is a big road. The word for conquering is וְכִבְשֻׁ l’chvosh. כִבְשֻׁ chivush is capture. The land of Israel connects several continents by road! It connects the economic, or caravan flow. This is why so many wanted to capture and control Israel! This is what God is telling Adam to do with the earth; וְכִבְשֻׁהָ v’chivshuah, and bring it under My dominion.
Rabi Jonathan Sacks, talking about the : “Thus was born the cluster of ideas that, though they took many millennia to be raised, led to the distinctive culture of the West: the non-negotiable dignity of the human person, the idea of human rights, and eventually, the political and economic expressions of these ideas; liberal democracy on the one hand, and the free market on the other.”
“… That is what Jefferson meant in his famous words, “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal,” and what John F Kennedy alluded to in his inaugural address when he spoke of the “revolutionary belief” that “the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.””
Someone said “all other nations were nations first and godly later, but the US was godly first and a nation later.” This is why our most sacred principle is the equality and rights of the individual. The normative belief is the caste system. This belief in equality of man was a revolutionary idea, but it is based in the first words of the Bible. The Jewish belief, given to all humanity through was that this caste system was wrong. Because God created Adam and Chava in the image of Himself. So the rights of man come not from the government, but from God.
“What kept the structure in place was an elaborate hierarchy whose origins were told in myth, whose most familiar natural symbol was the sun, and whose architectural representation was the pyramid or ziggurat, a massive building broad at the base and narrow at the top. The gods had fought and established an order of dominance and submission. To rebel against the earthly hierarchy was to challenge reality itself. This belief was universal in the ancient world. Aristotle thought that some were born to rule, others to be ruled.”
“Plato constructed a myth in his The Republic, In which class divisions existed because the gods had made some people with gold, some with silver, and others with bronze. This was the “noble lie” that had to be told if a society was to protect itself against dissent from within. Monotheism removes the entire mythological basis of hierarchy … The concept of equality we find in the specifically and Judaism generally is not an equality of wealth: Judaism is not Communism. Nor is it an equality of power: Judaism is not anarchy. It is fundamentally an equality of dignity. We are all equal citizens in the nation whose sovereign is God.”
So the question arises, “Why would anyone want to trade equality of dignity for a system where human rights are doled out at the whim of government?” Why do we see so many calling for socialism in the US today? The answer is simple: they are rebelling against God, against the principles He established when He first ordered the earth. With no regard for the consequences of their actions, people run riot in the streets in a display of anarchy. They demand a socialist dream, the Communist sharing of wealth. They are sold out to ha’satan, crying for his form of rule over God’s, because God said there are rules for righteous living and you, as My representatives must follow them. Men rebel at God’s , yet are willing to submit to a system where the only rule is he who rules says what you do, how you live, and how much you will live on. This system has only ever caused untold misery and death, yet this is what men chose rather than submit to God. We are insane.

Mekarot: some from a class from the Israel Bible Center, some from El Shaddai Ministries (Both Hebrew Roots, but both have some good stuff also) and some is just mine- which, who knows what I am at any given moment
Edit: I guess I should clarify, that last was said tongue-in-cheek. I am a dedicated One Messianic, and no equivocation or regrets. But sometimes the HR folks have some good stuff. That's what kept me in HR before I discovered MJ. You have to dig through a lot of bad, exercising discernment and double checking everything. But when you find gold, it's worth all the waste and fools gold along the way. And to be fair, just because it is MJ doesn't mean it's right either. There are MJ folks, then there's the OTHER MJ folks. Dan
