Mattityahu 10:17 (OJB) And beware of Bnei Adam, for they will deliver you up to the sanhedriyot (local councils, bet din courts) and in their shuls they will subject you to the shot (whip).
Matthew 10:17 (NASB) But beware of men, for they will hand you over to the courts and scourge you in their synagogues;
Jews did not flog non-Jews. And the early Nots’rim were considered Jews until 70 CE. Then they were unjustly blamed for the loss of the Bar Kochba rebellion and destruction of the Temple. Until then they were just another sect of Judaism and still could fellowship in their synagogues. However here Yeshua is warning His talmedim they won’t be able to do so forever.
There were actually nearly 30 sects of Judaism in the 1st cen, according to Dr. Ron Mosely. The Talmud says 24 of them were considered outside mainstream Judaism. Smaller sects were often persecuted by larger ones. And by far the largest, the Pharisees were persecuted and many killed by the next largest, The Sadducees; with the help of their Roman masters. So it should come as no surprise that Rav Sh’ul was persecuting the Nots’rim. He was doing what he thought he should as a good P’rush.
