And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish. And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites. And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines. And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever. (1Sa 27:9-12)
We hear a lot about David being a man after God's own heart, and doing what was right in the sight of the Lord; but there's another side of David that the text isn't shy about revealing to us. David did some pretty aweful things in his life.
Now, some have suggested that David was simply carrying out God's command to drive out the inhabitants of the Promised Land; but if that was the case, he certainly wasn't successful... and was only driving out small villages that he would be able to wipe completely out for his own purpose.
Does God allow us or approve of our exacting our own wrath on the people He has chosen not to bless?

I don't believe so.
Luke 6:28 "bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you."
If Yeshua commanded us to do theses things, then it would go seem to be contrary to allowing us to take our own personal vengeance against those we see as unblessed or simply in our way.
I think that God may have chosen to let us in on a lot of David's "dirty little secrets" so that we could better understand His grace and how it works. And also to show us how much we ALL miss the mark. If God calls David a man after His own heart, and David did all those things, imagine how all of us must stack up against him...
