Since Mother's Day is near, I am wondering how you handle it since our Mothers "expect" us to treat it as a special day? Also what do you say to every mom you might speak to on that day who expects you say Happy Mothers day to them?

Also what do you say to every mom you might speak to on that day who expects you say Happy Mothers day to them? Mothers Day is an odd holiday. Since it does not replace any biblical feasts, and we are commanded to honor our father and mother, I see nothing wrong unless this is the only time we honor her and motherhood in general. I say "Happy Mothers Day" to mothers and when mine was alive we went out for a meal. This year my wife may just have to suffer my cooking for a day.But as we remember mothers and make them feel appreciated, we should also remember and appreciate HaShem who gave us motherhood. Just my take on it.

Yeah, I try to stay away from Pagan traditions but something about avoiding Mother's Day does not seem right to me. I also got this from Keith an SDA I consult with on certain things:
Mike,
While it is true that there have been Mother's Day celebrations in other pagan cultures, the observance of Mother's Day in America was started by Christians. The concept of paying honor and respect to one's mother is certainly a Christian principle. God's love is often compared to the love of a mother, and even in the Ten Commandments we are told, "Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land that the Lord thy God giveth thee." There is no moral dilemma for a Christian to consider when it comes to showing special respect to their mother on Mother's Day.

... While it is true that there have been Mother's Day celebrations in other pagan cultures, the observance of Mother's Day in America was started by Christians. ... While I don't disagree about observing Mother's Day, his logic in getting there is drastically flawed. Who started it is irrelevant. The church fathers, Christians all introduced more paganism into their new religion than even any one pagan culture would have trouble matching! They borrowed from every pagan culture they could lay hands on, and made up a lot as they twisted their "New" Greek Legal Document to mean things the apostles could never have imagined! So the fact the observance of Mothers Day was "started by Christians" is not in the least reassuring. In fact, it would almost prompt me to reevaluate my opinion.
Women, especially mothers need to know they are appreciated, so by all means make Mothers Day special for your Mom. But be careful not to exalt her over God, nor even to make her a minor goddess. She is a special woman, but a woman nonetheless. Also, I doubt your mom would want to hear she is participating in a custom started by Christians either.

Dan C That is my thinking too!
