Messimom, Yes this area would fall under kashrut. In fact anything that we put in our bodies would fall under this category. This includes vitamins, medicine, even chewing gum! The good news is that there are kosher alternatives out there, you just have to know where to look. However regarding medicines, the Rabbis have ruled that one may take non-kosher medicine if it will save their life.

I live in Louisiana where there are probaly 500 Jews in the entire state which also known for its seafood and food fried in filthy pig lard so finding kosher meats is quite hard. Its just a lot easier in this day and age where even kosher meats like chicken (bird flu) and cattle (mad cow) can be very harmful to simply eat a vegetarian diet. Every store has vegetables and vegetarian meat substitutes. The only meat I have is on Feast days like Pesach, where I and my family slaughter the animals after the example provided in the . Just a suggestion.

Pig insulin...I wouldn't take it...I would look for some kind of alternative... Cow insulin is still widely avalible, I'll try to look up the particular brand... Also, isn't synthetic insulin avalible now?

Yes, in some cases when the selection is not suitable, no meat is a good option.

I believe I have found a grocery store nearby that sells Kosher meat (Hope I can afford it!) but I have another question.....what about resturants? Do you all eat steak when you go out, or just salads (NO BACON BITS!) I really love going out sometimes....cooking is a drag!

I was discussing kashrut with a Karaite Hakham a few days ago and he says the Rabbinical Kosher certifications are not to be trusted. His community actually employed their own slaughterer. His main concerns were that the "kosher" slaughter houses sometimes allow BHA, Resinous Glaze/Confectionary Glaze, Non-Kosher Gelatin, and even animal shortening which is helev!
Oy vey! Something to think about.

Also, isn't synthetic insulin avalible now? almost ALL of the insulin manufactured today is recombinant DNA based and is synthetic. The days of pork insulin is gone...HOWEVER...heparin is made from pig parts. There are some alternatives such as Lovenox...but not many.

To your first question about purchasing kosher meat, how could you not afford it? I know that it can be costly, but the long-term benefit is that you know you are doing something that is pleasing to HaShem. Now on to your second question: When going out to eat, my wife and I only eat the following: With those we also ensure (just by asking the staff or management) that no meat or shellfish was involved in the cooking process. The biggest things you have to watch out for are the Mexican resteraunts and the Oriental restaurants. Mexican restaurants tend to make everything with lard, and Oriental restaurants tend to use shellfish in their cooking. Hope that helps! L'shana Tovah, Natanel

Very good point. Many people do not realize that all Thai Curry paste for instance contains Shrimp Paste.
People buy Turkey sausage, and do not realize that it is in a pork casing.
One must be well aware of what they are eating if they are looking to follow the Kashrut Laws.

I think I can avoid the unclean meat without much problem. I think the Holy Spirit has helped in that regard so far!! But truly, I cannot afford 12.99/lb for frozen kosher hamburger!(at he Albersons 40 miles away!). I have teenage boys!! No, I will have to use the salt method until I am able to find another sorce. We can only do what we can do. Further, pork is used to manufacture digestive enzymes which my daughter needs to digest all her food otherwise she will die. She has a medical condition known as Cystic Fibrosis and it is not an option. I don't know if it is even possible to make this out of cows as pigs are closer to us than cows are genetically (isnt that an interesting thought! ) Here is where faith wins over works....I believe that the Holy Spirit will provide the solution when He is ready....maybe in His graciousness to us He will provide a Cure! I am not worried that it is a sin to give her the medication as He also told us to "chose life" as well. We do not live in Isreal where we have corperately adapted to the , therefore we suffer from the effects of unrightousness (lawlessness). It is my intention and pledge that to the best of my ability as much as I am able, I will walk. As we strive conform to His word, He will provide the means to accomplish His will. It is His Way.

You would find it interesting that even non-Messianic Judaism would not consider the medication given to your daughter to be a violation of . Life takes precedent over the keeping of certain Mitzvot. For instance, as we approach the fast of Yom Kippur one must not fast if it is not medically prudent, or if they are required to take medication with food. Shalom, Yitzchak

Absolutely!
Here is a comment I made a while back: "However regarding medicines, the Rabbis have ruled that one may take non-kosher medicine if it will save their life."[/i]
