Please realize that I'm new to the whole Jewish tradition so if I'm off - please let me know.
But if the day is set aside to rest from work, worship G-d then it depends on your heart in what you do. - For me, I love to cook with the Adonai- I talk to Him the whole time, listen for advice- I have a wonderful, fun and restful time spending it with Him. Something about being creative with Him is such a JOY!
I don't in any way see that as work. YET, I know some lady's see cooking as a chore and something that they can hardly wait to get over.
So, I as see it... follow your heart- Man looks on the outward appearance but G-d looks upon the heart. If in your heart you are relaxing and worshiping G-d while making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich- go for it. But if its a chore or a "pain" let it go- that is not what the day is about! To resay a phrase-Laws were made for man- not man for the Laws.

Actually, not just cooking, by any work can be very enjoyable. I find cooking very enjoyable. I am sure that the Lord enjoyed the creating He did for 6 days. But, for one day, we are told to imitate Him, to set it down, lay it aside, and rest from our labors. And no, following our hearts is absolutely the wrong thing to do. There are some very uncomplimentary remarks about the human heart in the Bible. I agree that the instructions are in the Bible for our good, that is why I want to get everything good coming to me!
